Choosing Your Blog Domain is All About Location, Location, Location!

by Karri Flatla @ Snap VA

The most common question asked “aside of what to blog about in the first place” still comes down the age old business adage, Location, Location, Location! Not a decision to be taken lightly, you should think strategically when deciding where your blog will “fit” into the existing architecture of your online business. By weighing and considering a few key factors now, you will not only prevent some costly backtracking down the road, but you’ll better protect the brand you’ve worked so hard to create.

Ask yourself the following questions to help you face this crossroads with confidence:

  • What will be the main topical focus of my blog?
  • What am I trying to achieve with my blog? More clients? Brand strength? A venue for self-expression?
  • What tone or “voice” will I use in my blog posts and does it compliment or contrast with that of my existing business website?
  • Would the same people who visit my website benefit from, be unmoved by, or possibly be insulted by my blog’s content?
  • If I wanted to move my blog off site or to my site later on, what costs (time, money, effort) would be incurred?

In the end, your blog’s Internet addy will have a big impact on both readership and marketability. The one thing you don’t need to worry about is using an offsite blog (www.myblog.com) as a way to create links back to your existing business site. This just isn’t good enough reason on its own to put a blog on its own domain. That’s because doing what’s best for your users trumps what’s best for the search engines. Ultimately, your blog should reside wherever your audience will find it the most convenient, the most logical, and the most useful.

Blogging should be more inspiration then perspiration. Check out Are You Ready to Blog for Business? to get ideas on what to write about on your business blog.
